Reporting to the Mass General Brigham (MGB) Enterprise Vice President of Emergency Medicine (VP), and working closely with the leadership teams at Salem Hospital and Newton-Wellesley Hospital and across MGB, the Administrative Director is responsible for leading the administrative operations of the emergency medicine practices and partnering with emergency department (ED) clinical leadership to achieve optimal clinical operating performance in their respective ED's:Practice and Administrative Operations - The Salem Hospital and Newton-Wellesley Hospital emergency medicine practices employ over 80 physicians and over 40 advanced practice providers. The Administrative Director will lead the practice management functions at each site, including overall planning, budgeting, financial management, revenue cycle, contracts, regulatory compliance, and general administration.

Clinical Operations - The Salem Hospital and Newton-Wellesley Emergency departments serve as the front doors to two highly complex and specialized community hospitals within the Mass General Brigham system, caring for over 150,000 patients annually. The Administrative Director partners with the ED chiefs, nurse directors, and other clinical and administrative leadership within and outside the EDs to optimize quality and safety, health equity, patient experience, patient flow, care innovations, staffing, operational efficiencies, service integration, and capital planning efforts.MGB's singular vision is to build the integrated academic health system of the future with patients at its center.

Advancing administrative and operating integration across MGB EM is critical to achieving this vision, and the Administrative Director will have a unique opportunity to serve in a key leadership role supporting the two busiest community hospital EDs in the MGB system, furthering MGB EM's ability to improve patient access, make care more affordable for patients, improve equity in clinical outcomes, and foster an ecosystem of innovation.Additionally, the Administrative Director will advance MGB's and the hospitals' United Against Racism campaign by broadly representing and fostering the institution's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.ResponsibilitiesPractice and Administrative OperationsDesigns, recommends, and implements management systems to maximize administrative effectiveness and efficiency across the practices and across MGB EM.

Partners with the ED chiefs to monitor and manage provider staffing levels consistent with patient demand and industry benchmarks.Leads the annual practice and hospital budgeting processes in close partnership with Mass General Brigham Medical Group (MGBMG) and local finance leaders and teams.Monitors financial performance, identifies key drivers of performance, and makes and implements recommendations to meet or exceed practice and hospital financial goals.

Oversees and optimizes facility and professional revenue cycles to maximize reimbursement and ensure compliance with all applicable policies and regulations.Manages the practice compensation plan and ensures efficient financial transactions and approvals, including payroll, expense reimbursements, check requests, and other routine financial tasks.Organizes and manages professional service agreements and contracts with other MGB departments and external third parties and ensures compliance with all applicable policies and regulations.

Presents financial and operational information to a variety of stakeholders on a routine and ad-hoc basis, including senior executives and physician leaders.Clinical OperationsIn conjunction with the VP, ED chiefs, ED patient care services leadership, and other clinical and administrative leaders, ensures that all services are delivered in a safe, effective, efficient, equitable, cost-conscious manner and in compliance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations.Monitors and evaluates the performance of the department's existing services and ensures the development of new programs to maximize safety, quality, efficiency, and equity while simultaneously identifying opportunities to reduce costs.

Ensures documentation of policies, procedures, guidelines, workflows, and escalation protocols to support consistent, high-quality care and service.Represents the EDs in various forums within the hospitals and on enterprise committees and groups.Leads the annual capital planning process on behalf of the EDs in partnership with ED clinical leadership.

Human Resources Directly manages and develops two administrative professionals and ensures that the team functions in a manner consistent with the values of the hospitals and MGB. Serves as the administrative partner to the site chiefs and APP leaders to ensure all administrative functions are performed consistent with MGB guidelines, policies, and procedures.Selects, trains, directs, and evaluates the performance of, and when necessary, disciplines and discharges direct report personnel.

Collaborates with Human Resources on employee relations problems as necessary.Instills, maintains, and enhances in employees the vision, mission, and values of MGB. Heightens employee morale, maintains open lines of communication, and ensures fair and equitable treatment and annual performance evaluations.

Advances the commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the development of individuals and teams.QualificationsGraduate degree in business administration (or comparable discipline), healthcare administration, or public health (or comparable discipline) preferred; bachelor's degree required.Minimum of 5 years of directly related progressively responsible experience required; supervisory experience preferred.

Skills Required Analytical ability necessary to resolve complex problems requiring the application of mathematical, clinical and management principals, theories and concepts and experience-based knowledge.Ability to develop short- and long-range plans and solve complex, multi-dimensional problems.A high level of interpersonal and communication skills to represent the Department and negotiate and persuade others on issues and programs the impact the Department, manage staff, or perform other duties requiring a comparable level of communication skills.

Ability to simultaneously support the needs of the Department while understanding how the Department fits within the broader context of the hospitals and MGB; ability to see oneself as the leader of the Department and a leader of the hospitals and MGB. High degree of confidentiality and ability to manage sensitive issues related to personnel and finances. Outstanding organizational skills are necessary to manage many competing timetables and responsibilities.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills to communicate effectively with a large and diverse constituency, including senior hospital administrative staff, Department faculty and support staff, representatives of other hospital an MGB teams offices, collaborating institutional officials, and outside agencies, representatives, and vendors. Ability to work independently and to accept responsibility for complex and sensitive decision-making as it relates to the overall performance of the Department.
