About the Advanced Propulsion Lab (APL)

The APL is a cross-faculty hub that brings together researchers from UCL's Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering departments. With the Department of Mechanical Engineering leading the way, the APL focuses on the critical task of decarbonizing the transport sector. This includes land, sea, and air applications, as well as the development of electrofuels to power these modes of transportation.

About the Role

We are currently seeking an application engineer specializing in electrical machine systems. As an integral part of the APL team, you will provide technical support to researchers, academic staff, students, and other stakeholders. Your responsibilities will span a wide range of activities, including:

  • Developing research projects
  • Modelling and simulation
  • Analyzing and validating electrical machine design solutions
  • Managing technical staff supporting APL research and teaching
  • Assisting with equipment maintenance and management

The role demands proficiency in delivering electrical machine projects efficiently and independently. You'll need to be approachable, collaborative, and ready to offer guidance when needed.

About You

We welcome applications from candidates with expertise in the following areas:

  • Development and characterization of electrical machines (including dyno testing and thermal characterization)
  • Integration of electric propulsion systems
  • Proficiency in electrical engineering software packages
  • Electrical power system integration
  • Operation of electrical systems (motors, power converters, batteries, fuel cells) and automation
  • Familiarity with one and three-phase systems
  • Adherence to safety protocols in workshop or laboratory environments
  • Practical skills for converting designs into functional products
  • Circuit design, layout, and electronic fault finding

While direct experience is preferred, we are committed to providing training to bridge any skills gaps. Candidates demonstrating advanced knowledge and a passion for ongoing learning will be considered.

Additional Considerations

Qualifications at the Masters or PhD level, operational management experience in workshops or laboratories, and supervision of junior staff or students will enhance your application.
